While I’m waiting for the Dell workstation to arrive, I thought I’d return to the Hall of Shame. I’m sorry, but I just can’t leave Blu-Ray alone. The scenario that most drives me out of my gourd is this:
You put in a Blu-Ray disc. The volume jumps to way above the level for a normal movie. An ad for Blu-Ray, the technology, appears on the screen. You’re already aware of Blu-Ray – after all, you’re trying to watch a Blu-Ray disc – so you hit fast-forward. An admonishment appears on the screen: that operation is not allowed. You try to get a menu; you can’t do that either. Fuming, you watch the whole paean to the technology that you’ve already bought. You resist the urge to pull out the disk, break it into little pieces, and mail them to Sony.
What’s the point of this abuse? It can’t be to sell Blu-Ray players or discs, because the audience consists entirely of people who have already purchased. It can’t be to reinforce what a good purchase decision the customer just made, because you can’t skip the ad, so the effect is the opposite. I am completely baffled.
