I have been working through the development of a lens screening procedure for the last couple of months. For the past three days, I’ve been writing it up, and have posted it here. It’s far from complete, but it’s ready for a few people to try using it to test their own lenses. If you are willing to be a guinea pig, I’d appreciate it if you’d test a lens or two and let me know how it came out. I’m sure that there are places where I could be a lot more clear in my instructions, and if any of you would help me find them, I’d be grateful.
Feel free to use the comments feature to give me feedback. And I’ve you find any poorly-assembled lenses in your collection, I’d like to see your raw files.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
Sent you an email with a link to some test results. I found the procedure relatively simple although my (Zeiss) star target was a little smaller than optimal. Seemed to yield meaningful results still.

Hi Jim
Performed your lens screening test on the new Sony 24-105 FE G today. What fun and thank you. It ‘appears’ to be a very good copy for a zoom lens. Your instructions are spot on. For the first time I was able to look at a lens without the usual ‘brick wall’ etc approach. Which was never really useful in any meaningful way. I had used the ‘lens rentals’ Siemens star approach in a minor way before, but not in the way you suggested. The test was quick and easy to perform. I have also learned so much from reading your informative words.
Many thanks.
Steve
