In the previous few posts I’ve been talking about needing Bayer-CFA’d sensors with pixel pitches approaching one micrometer in order to get everything out of our lenses. I thought I might not live to see that day.
It turns you that you can buy those sensors right now. From SK hynix. The part number is Hi-841, and the pitch is 1.12 um. No, they’re not full frame. They’re 3264×2448 pixels, and they’re the so-called “1/4 inch” physical size. No, they’re not 14 bits. They’re 10.
If these sensels were scaled up to full frame, a sensor would have 688 megapixels.
Pretty amazing.
