In the last post, I talked about the cellphone’s impact on photographic art. In this one, I’ll return to safer ground, and tell you what I think will happen to cameras in the near future.
- Cameras will become ubiquitous in cellphones.
- Because thinness is a selling point for cellphones, lens focal length and therefore sensor size will be limited, limiting low-light performance.
- In spite of small sensors, image quality will show improvement as a result of better sensors and, more importantly, better image processing.
- Because cellphone cameras will be viewed by most folks as free and good enough, the low end point-and-shoot market will disappear.
- There will be a race to quality in what is now the high end P&S world (it will be the only P&S market left) so that manufacturers can differentiate their offerings from cellphone cameras.
- As a small percentage of cellphone users (since there are so many cellphone owners, that number will be large) become seriously interested in photography the DSLR and electronic-viewfinder interchangeable lens markets will grow.
