Flattening the visual field

Usually you think of a long lens flattening perspective. Sometimes, all it takes is a lack of visual clues. This image was made with an 18mm lens on a M240:

I think it works read as a flat subject, and also as two 90-degree planes that join 60% of the way across the image. The latter is the actual subject geometry.
