I haven’t posted in more than a week. It hasn’t been just laziness; Robin Ward and I have been in the process of converting to a new hosting company. Robin’s designed a new website, and integrated the blog into it. The look has changed to match the website. I hope you like it.
The reason for the change in hosting provider was to synchronize with a similar change made at the Center for Photographic Art. The company we had been using, IX, while delivering adequate performance for me personally, wasn’t up to the load imposed by the CPA, especially during the Juried Exhibition entry period last fall. We hope to have substantially larger volume this year, and we needed hosting company with the capacity to provide quick response under our anticipated load.
Like so many things, CPA’s hosting shift caused a cascade of events. I decided to move my hosting at the same time, since I sometimes maintain both sites and I didn’t want to have to remember two GUI’s. Robin had been working on a new web site for me, integrating both the underwater work that had been on the www.kasson.com website with the more serious work that had been at www.kasson.org. Now both URLs point to the same site. We decided to roll out that site simultaneously with the change in hosting. While we were constructing the new website, it seemed natural to integrate the blog into it. So there you have it; we pulled on a thread and reworked the whole sweater. I think Robin did a great job.
Yesterday I changed the DNS records to point to the new website. It was not the smoothest rollout in the world. This morning the new web hosting company, Media Temple, suffered a failure that caused the whole website to go dark for about an hour. James Bond used to say, “Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, and three times is enemy action.” So far, the less than stellar reliability is just happenstance.
I encourage you to poke around the larger website as well as reading this blog. There are links across the top of the blog that will take you there. If you find problems, please let me know.
